Dunedin IT’s Green Credentials: Supporting Wildlife and the Environment

Jamie, the Managing Director of Dunedin IT, visited Handa Island for the fourth time. He drove his electric car and took a short boat ride from the mainland to the island, arriving ready to deploy the latest upgrades for the staff and rangers of the Scottish Wildlife Trust. The pole holding our 4G solution succumbed to the strong winds on Handa Island. However, the 4G unit itself remained intact and operational, as it has been for the past two years. As we mentioned earlier, our green credentials are a companion piece to our Wildlife and Environmental themed project. At Dunedin IT, we are committed to sustainability and minimising our environmental impact. Here are some of the key areas where we are making a difference:

All the Directors of Dunedin IT now have either fully electric or hybrid vehicles. This transition to greener transportation options helps reduce our carbon footprint and supports our commitment to sustainability.

We are proud to partner with Microsoft, whose services are Net Zero. This means that the carbon emissions associated with their services are effectively reduced to zero. By leveraging Microsoft’s Net Zero services, we ensure that our operations are environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Hardware

Many of our clients refresh their hardware every three years. We encourage responsible disposal and recycling of old hardware to minimise electronic waste. Additionally, we work with our clients to implement energy-efficient hardware solutions that reduce power consumption and environmental impact.

We’re not going to tell you we’ve reached some award-winning levels of green excellence, but we are certainly making headway each year, and we feel as a technology company there is certainly potential for a lot of waste to occur.

Our latest trip to Handa Island brought with it continued improvements aligned with supporting the staff on the Island to remain connected to Scottish Wildlife Trust. Handa Island is in Eddrachillis Bay off the west coast of Sutherland, Scotland, and as you can imagine, Handa Island lacks its own utilities, so all power is sourced from the solar panels, for all the electrics including the hardware we have installed for the staff’s internet connection. Additionally, Weather conditions can change rapidly with it being highly exposed to the elements, high wind speeds and heavy rains.

This time, we are using a more streamlined device that magnetically mounts onto the bothy. All the previously installed hardware remains the same, allowing us to continue monitoring the status of the devices remotely and providing any necessary support to the staff with ease.
